Timeline of the Rulers of France From 840 Until 2017

Course of events of the Rulers of France From 840 Until 2017 France created out of the Frankish realms that succeeded the Roman Empire, and all the more straightforwardly, out of the declining Carolingian Empire. The last had been set up by the incomparable Charlemagne yet started parting into pieces not long after his demise. One of these pieces turned into the core of France, and French rulers would battle to manufacture another state out of it. After some time, they succeeded. Conclusions differ with regards to who the main French lord was, and the accompanying rundown incorporates the entirety of the transitional rulers, including the Carolingian and not French Louis I. In spite of the fact that Louis wasnt ruler of the advanced element we call France, all the later French Louis (finishing with Louis XVIII in 1824) were numbered successively, utilizing him as the beginning stage, and its critical to recollect that Hugh Capet didnt simply concoct France, there was a since quite a while ago, befuddled history before him. This is a sequential rundown of the pioneers who have administered France; the dates given are the times of said rule. Later Carolingian Transition In spite of the fact that the illustrious numbering begins with Louis, he was not a lord of France but rather the beneficiary to a domain which secured a lot of focal Europe. Should You Use a Pseudonym When Writing

Should You Use a Pseudonym When Writing A lot of famous writers have published their work using pseudonyms or pen names, and the reasons they give for doing so are many. Back in the days when women werent considered bright enough to be serious thinkers and writers, many female authors wrote under male pseudonyms so their work would be taken more seriously. Fortunately, those days are gone, but there are still many reasons to use a pseudonym. Youre Writing on a Controversial Topic Some topics are extremely decisive and can cause a lot of anger from those with an opposing viewpoint. You may not want to start receiving the hate mail that comes with advocating certain views, so you may decide to generate a pen-name. For example, if you were to write in favor of atheism or are pro-choice, you might think it wise to keep your own name out of the equation to avoid being ostracized by friends or family members who dont share your views. There are those who say this is a bad reason to use a pseudonym, but I can understand the reason why some people would make this choice. You Write in a Variety of Genres People often buy books by authors they like because they think they know what to expect from them. As a result, authors sometimes use pseudonyms when they depart from a genre in which they are well-known. J.K. Rowling, famous for the Harry Potter series, wrote a detective story under the name Robert Galbraith for this reason. Its definitely not a childrens book, so she obviously felt she should use a different name so people wouldnt buy her book with expectations based on her earlier work. You Have the Same Name as a Famous Author If your name is Stephen King, it wouldnt really be fair to raise expectations by publishing your work using your own name. Besides, you want to become famous as an author in your own right, so you may choose another name to distinguish yourself from another author. You Dont Like Your Name Some surnames are rather giggle-worthy, and sometimes well-intentioned parents saddle their kids with weird first names. Admittedly, if your work is good enough, you should be able to overcome this handicap, but if you think your name is so strange that people wont take your work seriously, you might consider choosing another. Your Name Is Too Long or Hard to Pronounce You wouldnt want your name to occupy the entire book cover, so you follow the example of Dennis Max Cornelius Woodruffe-Peacock and choose an abbreviated form of your name. In this example, the author went of the much simpler Max Peacock. The same thing is true if your last name has less than the standard amount of vowels and you dont want to hear it being mangled by readers who cant properly pronounce it. You Have a Common Name If your name happens to be John Smith or Mary Jones, you might decide youd like something a trifle more distinctive. Once again, your writing will be the deciding factor behind your success or failure, but its understandable you might feel you need a name that sounds just a little bit more exciting. You Want to Separate Your Day Job From Your Writing Writers are often secretive about what theyre up to, and not all employers will be enchanted if someone in a very serious line of work were to produce a racy novel. It doesnt suit their corporate image, and you may find yourself in an awkward position in your day job as a result of your writing activities. Other employers may simply feel your heart isnt in your job because your real interest is writing. It isnt really fair, but it does happen. You Have Higher Writing Ambitions Some publishing houses produce endless streams of formula-fiction, and of course, they need writers to make the stories varied enough to keep their readership interested. Romance series are a good example. Theres no formula that actually says what has to happen on each page, but the stories tend to be similar. Readers know what to expect. Nobody expects great literature. They just want their romantic story with erotic moments, a bit of conflict, and a happy ending. If youre still hoping to write a serious novel, you might want to hide your pulp fiction persona behind a pseudonym. Your Publishers Will Know Your Real Name Whatever your reason for choosing to write using a pseudonym, you have to remember anonymity can only go so far. You need to cover the legal side of things, signing contracts and protecting copyrights; and of course, you do want to be paid. You will have to give your real name, but you can add writing as in front of your pseudonym to indicate your public persona will be represented by a different name.

The Beginning to World Instability World War I - 956 Words

Optimistically the Great War, later termed World War I, was predicted to be the war to end all wars. Given the number of wars that have ensued since, unfortunately, this prediction was unreliable. Nearly 10,000,000 military personnel and 7,000,000 civilians lost their lives in World War I and an additional 20,000,000 people were wounded. War land damage was catastrophic. Of the nine French villages completely destroyed on the Western Front during World War I, six remain uninhabited to this day. Undisputedly, World War I had a tremendous impact on the people of many countries. Map changes in Europe and the Middle East, the Treaty of Versailles with its political and economic impact on Germany, and fear over the installation of Russian communism were among the negative legacies of World War I. Combined they would contribute to an unstable geopolitical climate inevitably leading to future world conflict. The European and Middle Eastern map changes ushered in by the Allied vict ors at the end of World War I were punitive and had an unfortunate effect on future world stability. The Allies determined that they would create new nations to split up the ex-German territories and ex-Ottoman Empire colonies as compensation for the land losses the Allies faced during the war. Illocutionary Acts in Speech-Act Theory

In speech-act theory, the term illocutionary act refers to the use of a sentence  to express an attitude with a certain function or force, called an  illocutionary force, which differs from locutionary acts in that they carry a certain urgency and appeal to the meaning and direction of the speaker.   Although illocutionary acts are commonly made explicit by the use of performative verbs  like promise or request, they can often be vague as in someone saying Ill be there, wherein the audience cannot ascertain whether the speaker has made a promise or not. In addition, as Daniel R. Boisvert observes in Expressivism, Nondeclarative, and Success-Conditional Semantics that we can use sentences to warn, congratulate, complain, predict, command, apologize, inquire, explain, describe, request, bet, marry, and adjourn, to list just a few specific kinds of illocutionary act. The terms  illocutionary act  and  illocutionary force  were introduced by British linguistic philosopher John  Austin in 1962s How to Do Things With Words, and for some scholars, the term illocutionary act  is virtually synonymous with speech act. Locutionary, Illocutionary, and Perlocutionary Acts Acts of speech can be broken down into three categories: locutionary, illocutionary, and perlocutionary acts. In each of these, too, the acts can either be direct or indirect, which quantify how effective they are at conveying the speakers message to its intended audience. According to Susana Nuccetelli and Gary Seays Philosophy of Language: The Central Topics, locutionary acts are the mere act of producing some linguistic sounds or marks with a certain meaning and reference, but these are the least effective means of describing the acts, merely an umbrella term for the other two which can occur simultaneously. Speech acts can therefore further be broken down into illocutionary and perlocutionary wherein the illocutionary act carries a directive for the audience, such as promising, ordering, apologizing and thanking. Perlocutionary acts, on the other hand, bring about consequences to the audiences such as saying I will not be your friend. In this instance, the impending loss of friendship is an illocutionary act while the effect of frightening the friend into compliance is a perlocutionary act. Relationship Between Speaker and Listener Because perlocutionary and illocutionary acts depend on the audiences reaction to a given speech, the relationship between speaker and listener is important to understand in the context of such acts of speech. Etsuko Oishi wrote in Apologies, that the importance of the speakers intention in performing an illocutionary act is unquestionable, but, in communication, the utterance becomes an illocutionary act only when the hearer takes the utterance as such. By this, Oishi means that although the speakers act may always be an illocutionary one, the listener can choose to not interpret that way, therefore redefining the cognitive configuration of their shared outer world. Given this observation, the old adage know your audience becomes especially relevant in understanding discourse theory, and indeed in composing a good speech or speaking well in general. In order for the illocutionary act to be effective, the speaker must use language which his or her audience will understand as intended.

Commercial Law Scottish Civil Court Structure

Question: Discuss about theCommercial Law for Scottish Civil Court Structure. Answer: The Court Actions which are Found within the Scottish Civil Court Structure Introduction This report has proposed to brief out the initiatives which were taken in order to support the Scottish procurement society in dealing with the disagreements in circumstances of an agreement and aspires to highlight the desire for an enhanced affiliation among the consumers and the providers. This report also aspires to grant an outline of the main preferences that were obtainable for the resolving disputes. It does not assert to be a complete report and does not include an approval by the Scottish Director of a specific dispute resolving system which was offered. While considering Alternative Dispute Resolving (ADR) it was significant to attain lawful suggestions by others (Scottish Courts and Tribunals, 2016). Contractual clashes were said and observed to be time consuming, costly and could injure the consumers or the providers affiliation. It was in everybodys curiosity to work in order to avoid clashes, but they do occasionally predictably takes place and a proficient and price efficient clash resolving process was of prime significance (Scottish Civil Justice Council, 2014). Agreements should include provisions for the resolving of disputes which were suitable having observed to look at their character matter and such ruling should, as far as probable, guarantee that associations with providers were preserved. In specific it was the guidelines that proceedings should usually be delighted as the dispute resolving way would be the final alternative. Scottish Executive Policy Alternative Dispute Resolving would be measured and utilized in all the appropriate matters and litigation should usually be the last alternative (Informa, 2014). Proper sections should be encompassed in all normal procurement agreements on the utilization of Alternative dispute resolving methods in order to resolve quarrels. The accurate technique of resolving would be modified to the particulars of the entity matters. There may be matters which would not be appropriate for settlement by way of Alternative Dispute Resolving , such as matters relating to deliberate unlawful activity, misuse of authority, Public law, Human Rights and vexatious litigants. There would also be clashes where, for instance, a lawful example was desired in order to illuminate the law, or where it would be divergent to the community concentration to reconcile. Dispute Evasion The significance of observing a dispute evasion practices cannot be over accentuated given the expenditure and disturbance sourced to any agreement when a argument takes place and the harm to the consumers or the providers affiliations. Though, the wishes in order to evade clashes should not take preference over security of the Scottish Directors privileges and wellbeing. The first significant pace was to have an apparent phrasing in the agreement that reproduce the aims of the individuals. This may embrace rule for accurate dispute resolving methods in multifaceted, modified agreements, to be functional in the occurrence of a quarrel taking place, with correct preparations for intensification. keep in brain though that excessively authoritarian rule which may decrease the alternatives accessible to individuals if there was a clash (Armstrong, 2014). Once the agreement was in place good agreement management was a means. Methods of Contract Management should comprise of scrutinizing for the premature discovery of any troubles. In any agreement both the individuals should be mandatory to grant the initial probable caution of any probable clash and usual deliberations among the consumers and provider should comprise assessments of probable regions of divergence. When a agreement was primarily recognized the significance of how the extinction or termination was to be administered mainly if there was a desire for continuing service escape, not unavoidably by the service provider should be inculcated in the brain and reproduced in the agreement by the utilization of proper exit sections. If a clash takes place, it was vital to administer it vigorously and absolutely and at the accurate stage in array to support untimely and successful arrangement. Redundant impediments and inadequacy can direct to quick appreciation of expenses and supplementary harms to the consumer or provider association. Dispute Resolving Dispute resolving in its widest sense, comprises of any procedure which can convey about the termination of a quarrel. Dispute resolving methods can be seen as a gamut ranging from the most unofficial discussions among the parties themselves, through escalating rule and more dictate interference from outside resources, to a full court investigation with stringent regulations of process (Out Law, 2014). Alternative Dispute Resolving was a frequently used word in order to encompass a assortment of procedures which involve the utilization of an peripheral third party and which can be recognized as an substitute to proceedings (Find Law, 2016). For the rationale of this assistance reminder, adjudication has been regarded as a form of Alternative Dispute Resolving . Negotiation and litigation were not forms of ADR (Mackrell Turner Garrett, 2016). Conversely, there was now some cross-fertilization among proceedings and ADR in a number of of the processes which were accepted by the tribunals. For instance, the technical regulations for marketable measures in the sheriff court which were presently functional only in Glasgow facilitate the sheriff to organize for the parties to utilize an substitute technique of resolving the matter, if the sheriff believes that would effect on the immediate declaration of the act. likewise, the viable Judge in the Court of Session can make a wide assortment of guidelines in order to modernize measures and persuade parties to concur on the substances where probable, so as to arrive at on an immediate end. Alternative Dispute Resolving was a sunshade word encircling diverse methods for determining arguments outside the court and can usually be classified into six types of Dispute resolving techniques such as (International Comparative Legal Guides, 2016): Negotiation- It has been regarded as the most universal form of dispute resolving where the parties themselves endeavor to determine the dispute. Mediation-It was a classified and prearranged form of compromise aided by a third party that was originally non-binding. If resolving was arrived at then it can turn out to be a lawfully obligatory agreement. Conciliation- It was same as intervention, but a mediator can suggest an answer. Neutral assessment- It was a confidential and non-binding method whereby a third party typically get lawfully trained and bestows an judgment on the prone effect at examination as a center for completion negotiations. Expert Fortitude- It has been a personal procedure concerning a self-governing specialist with inquisitorial authorities who gives a compulsory conclusion. Adjudication- In it an specialist has been trained in order to imperative on a mechanical matter chiefly used in building quarrels as outlined in the Housing Grants, Construction and Regeneration Act 1996 where rewards were fastening on the parties at least on an temporary foundation that was in anticipation of a additional procedure was implicated. Arbitration- It was a prescribed, personal and obligatory procedure where the argument was determined by the pronouncement of a chosen third party, the authority or judges. Lawsuit- It has been the recognized procedure whereby assertions were taken through the civil courts and carried out in community. The Judgments were compulsory on parties subject to privileges of petition. It has been disputed that the distracting lawful disputes which takes place away from the courts and into mediation was a tactic which would augment access to justice. First, the perception of access to justice was discovered and it was elucidated that although it has been said that the word disobeys meaning, at its mainly basic it was about access to the processes for making civil liberties effectual through state-sponsored public and reasonable dispute resolving procedures. It entails equivalent admission to reliable enforceable rulings and results that imitate the virtues of the matter in light of relevant lawful morals. However, it was elucidated that most of the significance in Alternative Dispute Resolving in authority around the globe has developed out of a malfunction of the municipal courts to offer admission to reasonable processes. This was because in many parts of the globe the unlawful and municipal courts were stuffed, lawful expenses were elevated and inconsistent, enforcement can be hard and in many jurisdictions there was small or no public funding for lawful relieve. Thus, ADR can be a means for the residents to side step the lawful systems in which they have no assurance. In addition, it was affirmed that the endorsement of ADR could be construed as fewer about the optimistic traits of conciliation and more about deflected matters to conciliation as a simpler and low cost operating option than making effort to repair or endow in the present lawful system. Thus, policymakers may be concerned in endorsing ADR in order to clear court lists, decrease the lawful assistance bill, decrease e nforcement harms or decrease court expenses on personnel. The Civil Court Structure in Scotland Although both Civil and Criminal matters were provided by the state and administered by the Scottish Courts Service by exploiting much of the same constructions and workers unlike the Criminal Court system where the state impeaches the accused for an offence dedicated seeking to prove fault to the higher standard beyond all practical disbelief and inflict sentence through sentencing fines or detention (Advice For Scotland, 2016); the Civil Courts transact with non-criminal issues, chiefly disputes of a private character among individuals, firms and public bodies in diverse areas including Agreement, Family Law, etc (Judiciary of Scotland, 2016). Through proceedings, the follower challenges to institute the obligation of the protector to the act, under the less arduous equilibrium of prospects and to be offered a ruling in favor of the remedy sought to determine the issue. Remedies include: compensation reimbursement, divorce, particular execute authority act and sanction in order to avert activity (BBM Solicitors, 2016). In disparity to the inquisitorial continental scheme, as in criminal matters, the adversarial procedure permits both parties in turn to present their pleadings and acquiescences of fact and compassionate law both common law and statute to a adjudicator normally sitting alone in summary process without a Jury of 12 not 15 as in Solemn Criminal assessment and acting as a arbitrator. Three main courts have jurisdiction over civil dealings in Scotland- the Sheriff Court, the Court of Session and the Supreme Court. Though there was some overlie in abate, the hierarchy of the civil court structure permits the division of matters based on the character if their lawful or economic intricacy and significance such that this may be reproduced in the level of court hearing the protests and also for a succession to a superior court in the occurrence of an appeal. The jurisdiction of the court pursues the principle of Actor debet sequi Forum rei (Reid, 2014). The Court of Session was Scotlands highest civil court. It covenants with all structures of civil matters, counting civil erroneous acts, agreements, family law, etc. Adjudicators would pay attention to all types of matters, but some would have specializations, and there were specific agreements for profitable matters (Clark, 2009). Types of Matters The Civil court structure of Scotland includes three tribunals nationwide and two European courts. The primary court which deals with civil matters was the Sheriff court, which attends to the mass of civil matters in Scotland. These matters have a propensity to be of little amount of money and family claims. The next court after Sheriff Court was the Court of Session which comprises of two part houses, the external and internal and at last the uppermost standing tribunal in the UK, the recently recognized Supreme Court (Drummond and Deeprose, 2016). There have been three kinds of civil court measures which were worn in the Sheriff Courts such as; Minute Claims procedures such as debts wherein the claim in issue was up to and including 3000; Summary cause procedure such as rent amount outstanding debts and relief of goods in which the sum of money involved was 3000 and up to and including 5000; Regular cause Process such as separation, kids land and assertions of revival of sum unpaid and grievance with the amount of price more than 5000. Personnel The Legal Personnel which have been required by the parties after the occurrence of a dispute can be an Arbitrator and a Mediator who can help people to settle the matter outside the court and who does not wish to take the matter to the court. This has been regarded as a best method adopted for resolving as if a case has been filed in the court then it would be pertinent to note that it would take time to grant them relief whereas it can be much easily and quickly granted by way of adopting ADR procedure (Pearson, 2016). Conclusion It can be concluded in the end that this report has briefly described that the actions which the court take in the matters where dispute arises can be by asking a party to pay fine or punishing the same if a more stringent act has been done and parties sometimes get the same relief after a long time. So, Alternative Dispute Resolving has been regarded as a much quicker way to get relief by settling the matter outside the court by way of Arbitrators and Mediators. References Advice For Scotland. Napalm and Agent Orange in the Vietnam War

Napalm and Agent Orange in the Vietnam War During the Vietnam War, the United States military used chemical agents in its fight against Ho Chi Minhs Army of North Vietnam and the Viet Cong. The most important of those chemical weapons were the incendiary napalm and the defoliant Agent Orange. Napalm Napalm is a gel, which in its original form contained naphthenic and palmitic acid plus petroleum as fuel.  The modern version, Napalm B, contains plastic polystyrene, hydrocarbon benzene, and gasoline. It burns at temperatures of 800-1,200 degrees C (1,500-2,200 degrees F). When napalm falls on people, the gel sticks to their skin, hair, and clothing, causing unimaginable pain, severe burns, unconsciousness, asphyxiation, and often death. Even those who do not get hit directly with napalm can die from its effects since it burns at such high temperatures that it can create firestorms that use up much of the oxygen in the air. Bystanders also can suffer heatstroke, smoke exposure, and carbon monoxide poisoning. The US first used napalm during World War II in both the European and Pacific theaters, and also deployed it during the Korean War. However, those instances are dwarfed by American use of napalm in the Vietnam War, where the US dropped almost 400,000 tons of napalm bombs in the decade between 1963 and 1973. Of the Vietnamese people who were on the receiving end, 60% suffered fifth-degree burns, meaning that the burn went down to the bone. Horrifying as napalm is, its effects at least are time-limited. That is not the case with the other major chemical weapon the US used against Vietnam   Agent Orange. Agent Orange Agent Orange is a liquid mixture containing the 2,4-D and 2,4,5-T herbicides. The compound is toxic for only about a week before it breaks down, but unfortunately, one of its daughter products is the persistent toxin dioxin. Dioxin lingers in soil, water, and human bodies. During the Vietnam War, the US sprayed Agent Orange on the jungles and fields of Vietnam, Laos, and Cambodia. The Americans sought to defoliate the trees and bushes, so that enemy soldiers would be exposed.  They also wanted to kill off the agricultural crops that fed the Viet Cong (as well as local civilians). The US spread 43 million liters (11.4 million gallons) of Agent Orange on Vietnam, covering 24 percent of South Vietnam with the poison. Over 3,000 villages were in the spray zone. In those areas, dioxin leached into peoples bodies, their food, and worst of all, the groundwater.  In an underground aquifer, the toxin can remain stable for at least 100 years. As a result, even decades later, the dioxin continues to cause health problems and birth defects for Vietnamese people in the sprayed area. The Vietnamese government  estimates that about 400,000 people have died from Agent Orange poisoning, and about half a million children have been born with birth defects. US and allied veterans who were exposed during the period of heaviest usage and their children may have elevated rates of various cancers, including soft tissue sarcoma, Non-Hodgkin lymphoma, Hodgkin disease, and lymphocytic leukemia. Victims groups from Vietnam, Korea, and other places where napalm and Agent Orange were used have sued the primary manufacturers of these chemical weapons, Monsanto and Dow Chemical, on several occasions. In 2006, the companies were ordered to pay US$63 million in damages to South Korean veterans who fought in Vietnam.

Research fmea and hfmea - Essay Example Thirdly, there is the graphic description process which involves the identification of potential failures as well as their causes and effects. Finally, there is a process of calculating the risk, which involves the calculating the severity, the detectability and probability scores. The Healthcare FMEA has been adopted specifically in healthcare for the purpose of analyzing the risks through the use of the detectability and criticality steps in such a way that it is presented as an algorithm (DeRosier, et al., 2002). In the adaptation of FMEA into healthcare, the calculation step is normally replaced by a hazard score that is indicated directly from a Hazard Matrix Table. HFMEA has five important steps which include defining the topic, assembling the team, graphically describing the process, conducting a hazard analysis, and finally, measuring actions and outcomes. HFMEA is an important process because it allows for the early detection of possible outcomes before medical procedures before they are undertaken. CLOUD COMPUTING Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

CLOUD COMPUTING - Essay Example clouds while the main services that an organization can take advantage of, with respect to cloud computing, include Software as a Service or SaaS, Platform as a Service or PaaS, and Infrastructure as a Service or IaaS (Srinivasan, 2014, p. 26-34). Cloud computing has become an important service for many businesses regardless of size. Some of the benefits that can be realized from the adoption of cloud computing include but not limited to a substantial reduction in operational expenses. The City of Pittsburgh knew about the benefits and took on the process of exploiting them. The aim of this essay is to assess the overall procedure that the City of Pittsburgh used towards cloud adoption. The structure will mostly be based on the issues that prompted the adoption of the technology and then the procedure used in choosing the vendor. Most organizations have been abandoning their own forms of storage and adopting the cloud storage due to its cost effectiveness and the ability to boost productivity as well as competitiveness. Some of the companies providing cloud solutions include Google, Netflix, Dropbox, and Microsoft (Crookes, 2012, p. 7-11). Cloud computing enables businesses to improve efficiency and offer better services (Aljabre, 2012, p. 235). However, in spite of these benefits, organizations must assess themselves to determine whether this is the best option since it comes with some risks such as the security of the data held at the cloud servers (Srinivasan, 2013, p. 49-51). Such risks may lead to uproar between the stakeholders and a reliable approach has to be used so as to convince the stakeholders and any other involved parties. The City of Pittsburgh required exploring the probable alternatives to its existing email system due to a pressure to the existing resources as well as the technology. Due t o the continuing demand for a reliable and efficient email system for the City of Pittsburgh and an inadequate supply of resources to maintain the existing

The Brain Left vs Right Essay Example for Free

The Brain Left vs Right Essay The brain is a continually researched part of the human anatomy. With advances in technology, medicine and psychology it has been continually researched. The current science we have now reveals many things about the brain, such as there are two hemispheres in the brain, the left side and the right side. How much truth is there behind certain hemispheres impacting learning differently? In this essay we will take a look at each hemisphere separately, together and there correlation to learning determining and evaluate any actual facts. The left hemisphere of the brain is assumed to control certain functions more so than the right side. The left brain is often more associated with tasks involving logic, analytical thinking, and language. Much of the research is controversial as to if each hemisphere is different, and unique. Hines (1987) states, clearly there â€Å"are differences between the two hemispheres of the human brain† in regards to how â€Å"they process information.† This being said if the left hemisphere is mainly in charge of language and logic, what is the right responsible for? The right hemisphere is thought to control expressive and creative tasks such as emotional, creativity, music etc†¦ There have been multiple studies that point towards each hemisphere having more control over certain areas than others. That being said there is controversy that you are using both hemispheres equally. There are many theories out there but no one hundred percent facts yet. With this in mind is either side more advantageous in regards to learning? The hemispheres usually work together in every aspect, they work together to create the best outcome. In order to read, for instance, a person needs to constantly access both the left and right hemispheres of the brain simultaneously. The brain has something called the corpus callosum, a bundle of nerve fibers. This is what allows the two brain hemispheres to communicate and transfer information freely. Brain Yochim et al. â€Å"†¦hypothesized that the RH [right hemisphere] performs a â€Å"coarse grain† analysis from which the LH[left hemisphere], which performs a â€Å"fine grain† analysis, then selects the most appropriate interpretation.†. Obviously the brain functions as a whole but is either side more advantageous in regards to learning? Then if each of the hemispheres of our brain has certain functions or specialties, this would make the brain avoid duplication of function. According to Ann Hermann-Nehdi â€Å"the brain functions as a whole, not two individual parts-has evolved into a useful framework for learning and performance.†(2010). The hemispheres work together making all learning a combination of the left and right hemispheres. There is however, a tendency if you will for one hemisphere to be more dominant. The dominant hemisphere directly effects how each individual will respond to new experiences and learning techniques. With this knowledge in mind we are better able to decide the style of learning to pursue. There has been and will be continuous research into the anatomy of the brain. The brain in its complexity may one day be figured out. When that one day comes maybe the facts will push humanity even further toward greatness. The two hemispheres of the brain may be responsible for different things, but both are used. In regards to learning that is also the case, we use both hemispheres and different learning styles to create the most logical interpretation of the presented information. The brain is a complex organ and the continual advances in science and technology may one day lead our knowledge of learning even further.

Pressure Groups Essay -- Politics, Public Engagement

Introduction Pressure groups are known to be small and extremely diverse formed on the basis of interest and activities, their functions give them a high public profile where minds are influenced and driven to make change. â€Å"A Pressure group is an organisation which seeks to influence the details of a comparatively small range of public policies and which is not a function of a recognised political party† (Baggott, 1995: p.2). An aim of pressure groups is to generate support which can influence political agendas; this can directly persuade the government to consider taking action. In this essay I will concentrate upon exploring on various issues on pressure groups, discussing the relationship between the groups, their use of the media and their status as â€Å"insiders† and â€Å"outsiders† in the political process. Pressure groups have two main types of groups the insiders and outsiders which each promote a common cause with a different relationship with the media and political party making one as an unheard voice in the public sphere. To the public Pressure groups is another form where the public can engage in politics, participating directly in the political process. I will also intricate in this essay the arguments against pressure groups from the New Right perspective to the Neo pluralist perspective as well as the growths of pressure groups due to the use of the media and their political engagement. The size of a group is a basic indicator of how much public support they get especially those that posse’s open membership, they mobilise through demonstrations, protest involving some non members through organised events. The different types of well known pressure groups that I will include are ‘Greenpeace’, ‘Child Poverty Action ... ...te and develop policies. Using a term called ‘reactive coverage’ which uses the media to put across its viewpoint and influence. â€Å"The child poverty action group used media coverage to demonstrate that an issue was of public concern and therefore reinforce a case being made civil servants† (Field, 1977, pp53- 4). Environment pressure groups i.e. ‘Greenpeace’ a well known pressure group backed by the government and the public has used the media to help change the ‘climate’ of public opinion having an immediate influence. â€Å"The growing use of the public relations and the media specialist by pressure groups reflects the influence which they believe the mass media have over public opinion and policy decisions† (Baggott, 1995: pp. 184). Other strategies that pressure groups have used are posters or press advertisement in order to get their message across to its public.

Mind and Morality Essay

The external factors play a huge role in shaping one’s decisions. One may think that his genetic and background history has the most influence on his actions, but in reality, the intensity of a given situation has greater impact in the choices of the individual. The surroundings one lives in ultimately influences his perception, decision, and morality. In his essay, â€Å"The Power of Context,† Malcolm Gladwell states how it is the little things in life that makes the bigger difference and in many aspects this is true. In Daniel Gilbert’s essay, â€Å"Immune to Reality† he talks about how human perception about reality is not always accurate. In Oliver Sacks’s essay, â€Å"The Mind’s Eye† he shows how there are many different perceptions to view the world. So at the same time, is it possible to dictate what is right and wrong in one’s life if all the decisions are a result of his given situation and surroundings? Also the morality for each person varies depending on their circumstances and perception of their world. Ultimately, an absolute form of right and wrong does not exist because the context of the situation always changes, but still it is possible to achieve an applicable standard of morality in society. Each individual has his own way of looking at the world that is completely unique when compared to the way another person does. This is perception of reality and this form is always open to discussion because the person generates this viewpoint. Each individual makes his decisions based on his perception of the world. â€Å"The processes by which we generate positive views are many: we pay more attention to favorable information, we surround ourselves with those who provide it, and we accept it uncritically† (Gilbert 134). In many instance one creates his own perception to suit his way of thinking, so the individual could be in the center of his world. â€Å"He seemed to regard this loss of visual imagery as a prerequisite for the full development, the heightening, of his other senses† (Sacks 304). Most people see becoming blind as unfortunate event, but according to this person it helped him to improve his other senses. â€Å"The tabloids dubbed Goetz the subway vigilante and the death wish shooter† (Gladwell 153). Rather than seeing Goetz as a lunatic the newspapers depicted him as a hero. So this shows the difference in perception between people and how it varies from individuals. Importantly since each person’s perception varies it is hard to claim whose perception is right or wrong because ultimately is there a â€Å"right† perception of the world that everybody should be following? Even when viewing a painting everybody has their own interpretation of the art. No one claims there is only one â€Å"right† perception; rather the different perceptions are simply different approaches towards looking at the world. â€Å"It was simply inconceivable that someone could pull a gun on someone else on the subway and be called a hero for it. † (Gladwell 154) shows how different viewpoints affect the verdicts of a situation. A hero to some people might be a villain to others and it is hard to claim who is the â€Å"right† hero. The difference in subjectivity among people will always create a discrepancy of opinions among people. Since a variety of perception exists, then is it possible to have a perfect set and stone â€Å"right and wrong† rules in life? The context of a given matter plays a huge role in deciding the morality of the event. Morality is very much depended on the background information of the event. It is very hard to dictate the morality of an issue without seeing the bigger picture. Most people might see stealing as a wrong act, but what if someone stole a piece of bread in order to make sure he does not die from starvation, is that still a wrong act? In a situation like that one might feel sympathetic to that poor fellow and probably will see stealing as reasonable in that given situation. â€Å"We do not realize that our views will change† (Gilbert 135), the idea of morality varies on the situation because the context of the event directly affects morality. â€Å"Blindness now becomes for him a dark paradoxical gift. This is not just compensation, but a whole new order, a new mode of human being† (Sacks 305), in many aspects blind people do not see their condition as a curse or burden rather a different approach towards living and for most sighted people it might be hard to understand and accept this approach. â€Å"That there are instances where you can take normal people from good schools and happy families and good neighborhoods and powerfully affect their behavior merely by changing the immediate details of their situation† (Gladwell 162) this shows how the little details of an event plays huge role in the outcomes of an event. Essentially, context of a situation is what dictates morality and it is going to be almost impossible to label morality as set and stone as something like the Ten Commandments because the context always changes. Even though the standards of morality vary according to the situation there are some aspects of morality that one subconsciously accepts. Some ethics are universally considered wrong and one’s mind without even one knowing already knows that some choices are not right. That is why the mind tends to usually question the choices one makes. â€Å"When we cook facts, we are similarly unaware of why we are doing it, and this turns out to be a good thing, because deliberate attempts to generate positive views† (Gilbert 134), subconsciously to some extend individuals are aware of the morality behind an action and this will help individuals to make their decisions wisely. â€Å"To what extent are we our experiences, our reactions shaped, predetermined, by our brains, and to what extend do we shape our own brains† (Sacks 303), There are some emotions and judgments that are simply preinstalled in one’s mind which aids an individual in making choices that are difficult. â€Å"After a while the bad guys wised up and began to leave their weapons home and pay their fares† (Gladwell 157) this shows how there is a consciousness inside individuals that helps in guiding with decision making. When making a choice that might inflict pain to us or others one’s mind will usually try to suggest against that decision. That is why the idea of taking an innocent person’s life is universally seen as a wrongful act in societies. Therefore, there is a sense of unconscious morality that lies within the hearts of most individuals. Achieving a complete form of morality is a very idealistic thought because practically it’s not possible. There are infinitely many ways of perceiving morality and it would be impossible to set a standard that would suit all the time. â€Å"Too often people with sight don’t see anything† (Sacks 310). There are parts that even one’s eye sometimes cannot capture meaning that sometimes it’s simply not possible to account for all the possibilities. â€Å"The benefit of all this unconscious cookery is that it works, but the cost is that it makes us strangers to ourselves† (Gilbert 135). People sometime engage in activities without being aware of the magnitude of the situation. †They are both based on the premise that an epidemic can be reversed, can be tipped, by tinkering with the smallest details of the immediate environment† (Gladwell 157) the intensity of the situation has a huge influence on the decision of the individual. Due to all this, perceiving morality completely would be very difficult. Also having a perfect morality would require infinite knowledge which humans do not possess. As an individual one is limited at what he observes at a given time and there are limitations for each individual in this world. However, through the perceptions of many individuals, people will be able to come up with a better understanding of morality. Even with the limitations each individual has a small understanding of morality in the back of his head. Essentially, when all these understanding that are possessed by individuals are combined then a suitable set of standards will be formed that can accompany most situations. The collective effort of people will help to generate a better set of morality that will help in creating a peaceful environment for people to live in. That is why it is important to have many different perceptions of morality because they all eventually lead to creating appropriate rules that will be suitable for the well-being of a society. Despite not being able to have an absolute morality with infallible accuracy and with infinite knowledge, an applicable method of sensing morality is still practical. Individuals lack the ability to have a perfect morality because for one to acquire it in completion one needs to possess infinite amount of knowledge. Despite this back drop each individual innately has the ability to know morality in small parts and therefore combining the small parts of every individual will help to achieve a suitable set of codes. The differences in perception between people only aids to benefit humans in portraying a better understanding of morality. That is why it is important that there are different types of perceptions because if there was only one view then a very limited and narrow minded principle would be prevalent in the world. The different pathways of thinking done by people finally leads to achieving a suitable mode of morality. An absolute form of morality will never be possible in this imperfect world, however, that does not mean accomplishing a reasonable standard is impossible.

The Role of Bamboo in Japanese Culture

Simple and unadorned, the bamboo is also symbolic of purity and innocence. Take o watta youna hito literally translates into a man like fresh-split bamboo and refers to a man with a frank nature. Bamboo appears in many ancient tales. Eventually on an evening when the moon is full, she returns to the moon, as it was her place of birth. Bamboo and sasa (bamboo grass) are used in many festivals to ward off evil. On Tanabata (July 7), people write their wishes on strips of paper of various colors and hang them on sasa. Click this link to learn more about Tanabata. Bamboo Meaning Take ni ki o tsugu (putting bamboo and wood together) is synonymous with disharmony. Yabuisha (yabu are bamboo groves and isha is a doctor) refers to an incompetent doctor (quack).
